If you haven’t heard of the Sweet Bee Theater in Pittsboro, you are officially missing out. Sweet Bee is Pittsboro’s only community theater and is home to the Pittsboro Youth Theater (PYT).
Tammy Matthews and Craig Witter founded the theater in 2012 to fill the void in live performance in Chatham County. More than 2,000 people attended productions in 2018.
Sweet Bee operates two full theater seasons and summers each year, aligned with the Chatham County School District’s semester and summer school schedule. In addition, multiple week long summer camps are offered for students with varying levels of experience with intensive, multi-week plays and/or musicals by audition for more-experienced actors.
Daytime theater classes are directed towards pre-schoolers and home schoolers in an opportunity to build life skills through the socialization process that theater can provide.

But the main event to mention now is the Chatham Community Players’ third production for the year to hit the stage on July 14 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm.
“The Miss Firecracker Contest”is on Sweet Bee Theater’s stage July 5 – 14, 2019. This whack job of a story is a side-splitting look at a dysfunctional Southern family hell-bent on wriggling out of their checkered past – they aim, scheme and blunder their way to proving they’re really something by coaching their trashy cousin into winning the beauty pageant at their small Southern town’s summer festival.
